Sasol Logistics Analyst Graduate Traineeship

Position Location: Houston, Texas, USA

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Logistics Analyst, Rail Fleet.  This position reports to the Senior Manager Truck and Rail Services and is located in Houston, TX.

Purpose of Job

Manage and monitor Sasol’s leased car fleet to maximize their utilization and minimize associated costs. This role will work closely with internal stakeholders to effectively size rail fleet and position equipment to meet customer demand and production needs. Ensure cars are efficiently utilized, by minimizing idle time, increasing railcar turns and minimize overall freight and rail storage spent. Provide oversight to ensure railcar inspections and repairs are completed in accordance with regulatory requirements, service provider and Sasol requirements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Analyze production forecasts, sales forecasts, and inventory requirements to determine rail fleet. Work closely with P&O, Operations, Sales, Customer Fulfillment personnel Rail Analysts (LC and HOU) and 3PL service provider to develop a railcar demand forecast plan to meet customer shipments and plant inventory requirements.
  • Compare demand forecast/plan vs pending orders to make sure they are consistent and take action to address discrepancies between forecasts and actual demand. Alignment with P&O must take place on a 6 -month and 12-month rail demand plan.
  • Meet monthly with P&O to prioritize car avaibality to business needs due to imbalance of rail fleet due to unplanned supply/demand changes.
  • Evaluate rail transportation trends/anomalies and understand their impact to the business / operations demand. Work with Rail services team to adjust routes and transit time to minimize impact on customers of rail delays.
  • Review and manage inbound empty railcar pipeline for LC and terminals and adjust as needed by moving cars to / from storage. Must take into consideration storage space constrains at LC yard and terminals.
  •  Evaluate fleet size vs. business needs and develop plan to cover surplus / shortfalls by cleaning equipment to move between fleets or move equipment to / from storage. Plan must incorporate rail inspection and cleaning needs.
  • Work with LC Logistics team to manage SIT yard railcar inventory levels to ensure the right cars are in the yard and the yard is at target levels.
  • Support Strategic Sourcing on raw material railcar inbound needs as requested.
  • Manage outside railcar storage yard inventory levels including yard activities – inbound / and outbound flows and ensuring they arrive / depart per plan. Maintain accurate inventory levels / records; review and approve invoices.
  • Develop car cleaning strategy to meet railcar business demand. Work with LC Logistics to maximize car cleaning at facility. Schedule and plan work at outside railcar cleaning facilities to supplement LC cleaning process.
  • Coordinate with LC Logistics to develop plan to ensure railcar inspections / qualifications are completed timely with minimal impact on the railcar supply plan.
  • Manage service relationship with the railcar 3PL partner to leverage 3PL systems to optimize fleet utilization. (ie plant and customer dwell times, transit performance for railroad service feedback, manage railcar demurrage billing program, storage cost optimization). Work with 3PL to improve reporting capability and SAP data integration to facilitate analysis of rail shipment data and demurrage billing.

Formal Education

  • Technical or Business-related undergraduate degree

Working Experience

  • 7+ years’ experience in distribution or logistic related business experience preferred
  • Experience with plant rail operations, rail equipment and regulatory requirements is desired
  • Manage supplier relationships to provide superior delivery performance
  • Work with Customer Service/Business teams to resolve service issues
  • Broad knowledge of SNA operations and products is highly desirable

Required Personal and Professional Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office- excel and pivot tables, word, power point; working knowledge of SAP required
  • Demonstrated ability to multi task and successfully work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to build & maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers at all levels
  • Self-motivated
  • Effective communication skills both oral and written
  • Strong negotiation and organizational skills
  • Analytical and conceptual thinking with ability to solve problems quickly and effectively
